The McKenzie Rebels ended 2022 with a pair of victories over Stewart County and Montgomery Central in holiday action last week.
Last Thursday, the Rebels defeated host Stewart County 61-48. Senior Marquez Taylor had the hot hand, scoring 30 points for the visiting Rebels.
McKenzie got off to a quick start, leading 17-6 in the first quarter. McKenzie’s defense was limiting as the Rebs took a 32-18 lead by halftime.
Stewart County was held to nine points in the third and McKenzie led 49-27. Stewart County closed the gap 7n the final frame with a 21-point eruption, but McKenzie had built too big of a lead.
Sawyer Wallace led Stewart County with 13. Garrett Maria added 12 and Hayden Wallace scored 11.
Tate Surber tossed in 11 for McKenzie.
On Friday, McKenzie toppled Montgomery Central 65-37.
Taylor and Surber had 17 apiece to pace the Rebels to victory.
McKenzie raced to a 30-11 lead by halftime and never looked back.
Chris Fox led Central with 16 points.
The Rebels improve to 5-2 thus far. After Tuesday night’s battle with Class 3A runner-up Jackson-Southside, the Rebels open district play when Big Sandy visits Friday night.
