HMS Mustangs top Rebels 38-14

 The Huntingdon Middle School Mustangs took their 4-1 record on the road Thursday to McKenzie to face the 5-0 McKenzie Rebels and the Mustangs scored all five of their possessions in the first half and added a long punt return to defeat the Rebels 38-14 to go 5-1 for the season with the last game of the season coming Thursday at Paul Ward Stadium against Decatur County.

 The Mustangs got the ball first and in two plays put the ball in the end zone against McKenzie as Kylen Turner sprinted 47 yards to score with only 29 seconds gone off the first quarter clock. The two-point conversion failed and Huntingdon led 6-0. McKenzie then punted and Kenton Smith returned the ball 30-yards to the Rebel 38 four plays later Smith found the end zone from a yard away and ran in the conversion for a 14-0 lead.

 The Rebels were forced to punt and Zayden Connelly returned the kick for 30 yards to the Rebel nine and two plays later Smith scored from nine yards out with one-minute left in the first quarter. The conversion failed and the Mustangs held a 20-0 lead.

 The Rebels responded with their next possession as they moved down the field from their own 35 in five plays behind the quarterbacking of Cole Brown who completed 1 of 2 passes on the drive for 15 yards and ran twice for 16 yards with the last ten yards coming for the touchdown with 6:45 left in the first quarter. Brown then passed to Jacobi Melton for the two-point conversion to make the score 20-8.

 The Mustangs took the kickoff from the 50-yard line and after losing four yards on first down, Turner ran for 32 and then for 22 and the TD to make the score 26-8. McKenzie then punted on their possession and Smith took the ball at the 30 and raced 70 yards on the return for the touchdown as the Mustangs increased their lead to 32-8.

 The final score of the first half came with 13 seconds left as Smith rambled for 40-yards and the TD to give the Mustangs a 36-8 lead at the half.

 The final points of the night came when Melton scored from four yards out with 35 seconds left in the game to make the final score 38-14.

 Turner led the Mustangs with 120 yards on six carries and two TD’s. Smith ran for 97 on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns and a fourth on the punt return. The Mustangs ran for 196 in the game. McKenzie was led by Brown who rushed 7 times for 33 yards and completed 12 of 19 passes for 67 yards.
