Cafeteria staff honored for
West Carroll Director of Schools Preston Caldwell recognized members of the cafeteria staff at all three school facilities during the Aug. 5 Board of Education meeting.
Caldwell praised these employees for all the extra effort and hours they have put in during the pandemic, particularly when schools were closed back in the spring of 2020 and meals were still being provided to students at their homes throughout the district.
As Caldwell detailed, West Carroll’s food service staff have cooked up a total of 420,700 individual meals for students since the start of the pandemic.
Janet Winchester, district food service supervisor, pointed out that cafeteria staff were coming in and working seven days a week at one point during the spring of 2020, though that tampered off through the summer.
“I’m very thankful for each one of these ladies,” said Winchester. “They are the best in the world.”
Caldwell presented each of the cafeteria workers with School Meals Heroes plaques.

In other business:
•The board recognized high school, junior high, and elementary Beta Club members who recently received honors in national competition (as appeared on page 9A of last week’s News-Leader).
•High school foreign exchange students Bar Zylka from Germany and Jaruna Takashi from Japan were introduced to the board. Lara is a sophomore and Haruna is a senior.
•First and second reading approval was given to a board policy update requiring that citizens wishing to address the board at meetings must submit a written request to the director of schools at least four days prior to meetings.
•Several budget amendments were approved.
•The board approved the 2021-22 school district budget (as appeared on page 2A of last week’s News-Leader).
•The board renewed the district’s annual memberships in the TN School Boards Association (TSBA), TN School Systems for Equity (TSSE), Association of Independent and Municipal Schools (AIMS), and Sam’s Club.
•The board authorized the purchase of a new dish washing machine at the junior-senior high school.
•The board voted to retain Volco to provide third party bidding services for both food and non-food items for the 2021-22 school year.
•The board authorized Caldwell to seek bids for new gutters for the field house, fencing repairs or replacements and the construction of a concrete walkway on the visitors side of the football stadium, and repairs to the band tower.
