Domestic Assault
MPD Investigator Justin Brister was dispatched to an active fight on Friday, September 9 at a Forrest Avenue residence between two white males. The caller advised that a female was holding a bat standing beside the two males.
The two males stopped fighting upon Brister’s arrival and were both handcuffed and separated for officer safety. They agreed to waive their Miranda Rights and speak to officers. Joshua M. Gray and Caleb R. Huddleston both stated that the fight started over Gray looking at Huddleston’s phone. Huddleston stated he wanted the phone back and Gray began hitting him over the phone which started the fight. Gray admitted to taking Huddleston to the ground and putting him in a choke hold.
They were both charged with Domestic Assault and transported to Carroll County Jail.
Leaving Scene of Accident With Property Damage
Officer Derek Gannon responded to a vehicle accident near Bethel University with one vehicle leaving the scene on Thursday night, September 8. According to Gannon’s report, he arrived and observed a white Chevy Silverado with damage on the front bumper with debris laying on the ground. The truck’s driver was identified as Randy Ray Griffin of Kingsburg, California along with a passenger Randi Griffin. Both occupants advised they saw a blue Dodge Charger drift over just prior to the contact between the vehicles.
Approximately three hours later, the Charger’s driver, Jordan Payne, of Conyers, Georgia, came to the police department and advised he had not seen any damage to his vehicle and was enroute to meet someone. He also advised that he felt threatened and left the scene. Damage was observed on the front right-side bumper and fog light area of Payne’s vehicle. He was cited for Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
Public Intoxication
Early Tuesday morning, September 6, Herivia Strayhorn called McKenzie Police Department stating her uncle Keith Haynes hit her in the lip and was following her down Mulberry Sreet. She told dispatch he was following her while she was on the phone.
Officer Darren Davis responded to the call and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Strayhorn’s person. She repeated to Davis what she had told dispatch regarding Haynes hitting her in the lip and following her. She wanted him to leave her alone.
Davis spoke to Haynes who stated Strayhorn had a party and alcohol was involved. He advised she had too much to drink and got upset and began walking down the street. He stated that he was trying to get her home for her safety and she got more belligerent. Davis arrested Strayhorn for Public Intoxication and transported her to Carroll County Jail.
Assault/Criminal Trespass
According to a report filed by patrolman Tanner Jackson, he responded to a disturbance call at a conveinience store on Highland Drive. Jackson spoke to the store manager who advised that Maurice Lawrence came in to the store to purchase an item and was told to leave the store. She has verbally banned Lawrence from the store in the past but a written Ban Notice has yet to be filed. Lawrence got upset and punched the store manager in the face causing a small laceration to her lip. He left the store as the police were contacted. Lawrence was not located and currently has an Arrest Warrant and Criminal Trespass Warrant filed against him.
Burglary/Theft/Vandalism
Amber Mullins, of Jackson, reported to McKenzie Police that her locked sixteen foot trailer parked at a Cedar Avenue location had been broken into. Mullins stated someone attempted to cut the Master locks first and failed. They cut two swivel latches on the back door to gain access and took a number of DeWalt tools and paint equipment valued at $2,155 were taken.
Johnny Hawkins, owner of Carroll County Storage, was able to provide video showing Amber McKinney, of Gleason, and Christopher Lane, of Martin, pulling up to the trailer in McKinney’s pickup shortly before midnight, September 5. McKinney and Lane were observed loading stolen tools and equipment into her truck.
Later on Tuesday, September 6, Sgt. Trey Boucher located McKinney’s truck at her residence on Old State Hwy 22. She refused to identify herself and was detained for investigation. She did admit to being at the trailer and storage units with a man but refused to ID the man and refused to admit she was driving or took anything. Due to the video of the theft, McKinney was arrested and charged with Burglary, Theft, and Vandalism and transported to Carroll County Jail.
Further investigation revealed Christopher Lane was the male seen with McKinney. He was stopped by the Tennessee Highway Patrol on Wednesday, September 7 for DUI in McKinney’s truck and tools were found in the vehicle. Lane was also charged with Burglary, Theft, and Vandalism.
