All four county teams earn spot in playoffs

While this has been a strange season for high school football with all the COVID-related restrictions and game cancellations, it has been a pretty good one for local teams.

All four of the county’s football programs have advanced to the state playoffs with first-round games cranking up Friday night. All first-round games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

With an 8-2 overall record and undefeated status in regional competition, the Huntingdon Mustangs enter the playoffs as the Region 6A champs and the top seed. They will be hosting fourth-seeded Cornersville (7-3, 2-3) Friday night a Paul Ward Stadium.

The Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers (4-4, 3-3) finished fourth in Region 6A and will be on the road Friday night to face off with top-seeded Fayetteville.

The McKenzie Rebels (6-3, 2-2) grabbed the runner-up spot in Region 7AA, but due to COVID issues with some teams, they will be getting a bye in the first round. The Rebels will start their playoff run on Friday, Nov. 13 in the second round with a rematch against third seed Adamsville in McKenzie.

Like the Rebels, the West Carroll War Eagles will also be getting a bye for round one with a rematch from game 10 in the second round. The War Eagles (6-3, 4-2) enter the playoffs as the third seed and will traveling to second-seeded Greenfield (8-1, 5-1) after handing the Yellow Jackets their only regular season loss this past Friday night in Atwood.
