Mustangs end season at district

FOULED – Jeremiah Irvine is fouled while scoring in Mustangs loss at Union City.

The Huntingdon Mustangs entered the District 12-AA tournament as the fifth seed and had to travel to Union City, the four seed, to decide the final region spot. The Mustangs played one of their better games of the season, and after losing to Union City twice during the regular season, Huntingdon had several chances to win the game. But a three-point barrage by freshman Ben Kail sent the Mustangs home with their next game coming during the 2022-23 season.

The Mustangs got off to a quick start for the game and played well offensively, trailing only 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams stepped up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, and Union City scored eight points to the Mustangs’ six to lead at the half 24-20.

Union City appeared to put the game away with a 16-10 margin in the third quarter to lead 40-30, but the Mustangs scored the first eight points of the final quarter and trailed by two with around five minutes left in the game. Union City stretched the lead to 50-44 with under a minute, but the Mustangs failed to score after three chances after a couple of missed free throws and turnovers by Union City.

Kail made seven three-pointers for Union City and scored 23 points for the night. DJ Robinson also scored in double figures for the Tornadoes with 12, followed by Brooks 8, Lewis 3, Davis 2, and Lattus 2. Union City made 11-27 three-pointers for the night and were 3-9 from the foul line. The Tornadoes committed 15 turnovers with seven coming in the final quarter.

The Mustangs were led by Ty Kelley with 12, followed by Jeb Atkinson 9, Keller Smith 8, Jeremiah Irvine 7, Elijah Flowers 4, Landon Gordon 4, and Aden Hutcherson with 2. The Mustangs finished the season with an 8-18 record.
