BETHEL CLAIMS 2020-21 MSC MEN’S SOCCER REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Bethel has claimed the 2020-21 Mid-South Conference Men’s Soccer Regular Season Championship in the program’s first season of action within the MSC.

The No. 19-ranked Wildcats (10-0, 9-0 MSC) officially clinched the title with the cancelation of Monday’s match against Cumberland (Tenn.).

Bethel outscored conference opponents 30 to 8 in the nine conference games played this season. In conference play, the Wildcats averaged 3.33 goals per game which ranked first amongst MSC opponents.

In the regular season, Bethel’s offensive attack was led by Alphonso Gooden and Pascal Mohungsi. Gooden bagged eight goals in nine matches played while Mohungsi led the conference in assists with a total of seven.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with three players recording double-digit points. Gooden garnered 17 points followed by Mohungsi with 15 and Alioune Diop with 10 points. Diop was named the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday.

Gooden also netted four game-winners throughout the 2020-21 campaign which ranks as seventh-best in the NAIA.

Defensively, Bethel allowed only eight goals in the net all season and totaled 26 saves. Bethel’s defense ranks second-best in the MSC in goals allowed per game.

The Wildcats now look ahead towards the MSC Men’s Soccer Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. They will await the results of the opening round games to see who they will play next in the tournament quarterfinals on Friday, April 9.
