The West Carroll Special School District will soon be looking for a new director.
Dexter Williams, who has served as director of schools since June of 2017, recently announced that he is resigning as director and that has accepted positions at Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) in Jackson.
Williams will be serving as both head coach of TCA’s boys basketball team and as the school’s athletic director. He will be replacing current head coach Ken Northcut, who announced his resignation at the end of the TCA’s basketball season.
Williams’ resignation is effective June 30, and he will be finishing out the current school year as director at West Carroll.
According to Williams, this move back to coaching was not a spur of the moment decision on his part.
“It was something I thought and prayed about considerably,” said Williams. “It was just time to step away.”
Though he did not mention his resignation during the March 9 school board meeting, Williams personally presented his letter of resignation to school board members following that meeting.
In a recent telephone interview, school board chairman William Robinson said that while his is exited for Williams, he will also miss him.
“I wish Mr. Williams all the best in his new endeavor,” said Robinson.
And, according to Williams, he is excited about the new job and about getting back in the coaching game.
A 1995 West Carroll graduate, Williams was part of the War Eagles basketball team that made it to the second round at state that year. Williams went on to hold several coaching positions, most notably as Liberty Tech’s head basketball coach from 2003-2010, grabbing state championship titles in both 2006 and 2007.
Williams coached at Milan High School from 2013 to 2015 before returning to West Carroll, where he served as principal over the junior-senior high school for two years before being promoted to director.
Williams said he is especially looking forward to coaching his son, who will be entering the ninth grade at TCA in the fall.
“I knew I would always regret it if I passed this up,” he said.
The West Carroll Board of Education has set a special called meeting for March 22 at 6 p.m. to discuss Williams’ resignation and plans to start the process to fill the director position.
