Renee Hobson has realized her long-time dream of owning a child-related education program with the opening of her new after school program, “Two Sisters and a Book.”

An open house was held at the business on July 26 at the location at Webb School on Walnut St. in McKenzie.

She feels this is definitely her calling as she has always enjoyed working with children and in education.

She once attended Memphis State University with the ambition in mind of pursuing a career in the medical field. Soon she decided that wasn’t her calling, but did find another job that she really liked while attending school there. She worked at an after school program that gave her an insight into what she might like to do in the future.

She later received a degree from Jackson State and a B.S. degree from UT Martin.

She worked as an educational assistant for Northwest Tennessee Head Start and at McKenzie Elementary School. After being certified in special education, she served as the McKenzie Elementary School Special Education teacher from which she resigned to start her new program.

The name for her new program was inspired by Carol Holt, a McKenzie Head Start teacher.

“I feel this is my dream job,” said Hobson.

She says she has always enjoyed working with children and especially when she could be of help.

Students will be in a safe environment and will be able to get assistance with their homework with snacks provided.

Students in the first through the sixth grades will be served by the program that started August 6.

The hours of operation are from 3 to 6:30 p.m. There are 69 slots to fill on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost is $50 per week with qualifying families receiving assistance from the Dept. of Human Services.

Assisting her will be Holt and her mother, Priscilla Williamson. Student volunteers from Bethel University’s Community Engagement program will be helping as well.

Each day students will be provided snacks and games in the gym and then study and do homework in the Webb Historical Museum.

Mayor Jill Holland, who was present for the occasion, congratulated Hobson on the opening of the program and said it would indeed provide a valuable service to the community.
