Walmart in Huntingdon has new hours. After years of being open 24 hours a day seven days a week, the retail giant has decided to close its doors here for five hours during the wee hours of the morning.
The closing hours are from 1 a.m. until 6 a.m. The new hours started Oct. 5.
“It’s at all small volume stores,” said Monica Hill, Huntingdon store manager. “Stocking will be done during the day.”
Camden and Selmer stores are among the area stores that have these same new hours.
Signs are posted about Walmart here announcing the new hours.
An E-mail was sent to company headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas with questions about the closing Monday. However, it was unanswered as of 9 p.m. when this story was completed.
It is not known if it will cause some employees to be laid off if they will continue to be employed.
The shorter hours come on the heels of the closing of all Freds discount stores nationwide.
Hundreds share opinions about change in hours
The Carroll County-News Leader received more than 100 responses after posting the closing on Facebook.
Most of the responses were in favor of the closing.

Emily Doiron: “They will be open more than enough hours to shop. I would rather they cut the hours so that they can restock and not do it while open. Anyway, I think cutting the hours is better than closing completely. I like our little Walmart.”
Jennifer Murphy: “I leave for work at 4 a.m. and there are a lot of times I have forgotten to get something for lunch that day and would stop by, so I’m a little sad I can’t do that anymore.”
Diane Wood Tucker: “I was told those were the hours of lowest profit and highest theft, so they made the decision to close.”
Starlette Clifton Martino: “It will affect my family. My husband often stops on this way home to get us stuff at 2 -3 a.m.”
