The Veterans Day program at Huntingdon Middle School paid homage to veterans for their service and honored them for providing Americans with the many freedoms enjoyed today.
Glyn Jones of McKenzie, the grandfather of students Ashton Hutcherson and Kaleb Pearson, spoke during the assembly.
After giving the history of Veterans Day, Jones talked about what teamwork means in giving service to your country.
“The best analogy of a team is presented in the Bible,” said Jones. “Jesus compared the church to a body. It talks about all the parts working well to operate efficiently.
He added that one of the best lessons learned in service to our country is the fact it takes everyone doing their part.
“Now is the time for you to start doing your part: study, learn and build character with honesty and integrity,” he said. “Teamwork is essential in sports, family, work and life in general.”
He offered encouragement to the students.
“We have served so you can have the freedom we have had,” he said. “Don’t let our efforts be in vain. Make up your mind now to be an asset to your family, your church, your school and your community. Serve with honor and integrity always looking for opportunities to serve others.”
In closing, he noted that he was thankful to have had the opportunity to travel to many places around the world, but none compared with the United States, especially Tennessee and Carroll County.
Kaleb, who introduced his grandfather, said that Jones served in the Army National Guard for 35 years and was stationed at Camp Buuca, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom III in the 194th Engineering Brigade as a construction inspector and property manager. He is an electrician and is a deacon and active member of First Baptist in McKenzie.
During the program, the Huntingdon Middle School Band, played the “National Anthem,” “Young America March,” and “America the Beautiful.”
During the program, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by student Brayden Douglas.
Letters of gratitude were read by eighth grader Lilly Kee and seventh grader Olivia Noonan. Each seventh and eighth grader wrote a letter with Lilly and Olivia’s letters being chosen as the best.
Veterans and their branches of service were recognized during the playing of the Armed Forces Medley.
In closing and during the playing of the Taps by Jacob VanSparrentak, the veterans lined up around the gym with students who were relatives standing beside them.
