Two Sales Tax holidays planned for July, August

Shoppers can start planning for two sales tax holiday weekends by making a list of needed items for school and a trip to a restaurant for a good meal.

The first tax holiday is set to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31 and end on Sunday, Aug. 2 at 11:59 p.m. and is on back-to-school items.

The second weekend, which exempts restaurant meals and drinks starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7 and ends on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 11:59 p.m.

Other news that shoppers will be glad to know is the fact that on the first weekend the price for this sales tax holiday weekend doubles what it has been in the past. For school supplies and clothing, the 2020 price for qualifying items is $200 or less; for electronic items and computers, the threshold is $3,000 or less. That’s compared to a $100 threshold on clothes and school supplies and $1,500 on electronics in the years past.

These two weekends of sales tax holidays are for 2020 only, according to state officials.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused immense economic strain on Tennessee families. These sales tax holidays will allow them to keep more of their hard-earned money and support Tennessee businesses,” Gov. Bill Lee state in a press release.

A list of exempt items for the first holiday weekend is available at the Dept. of Revenue’s website. For updated information about the sales tax holiday weekends, visit tntaxholiday.com.
