Things To Consider Before Lifting Your Jeep

Installing a lift kit is one of the most popular ways to modify a Jeep. Whether you want to lift your vehicle for aesthetic reasons or to improve its off-road performance, there are a lot of things to consider.

Raising a Jeep can be pricey, but it can also yield spectacular results. Make an informed decision by reading about the following things to consider before lifting your Jeep.

1. Local Laws and Regulations

While it’s not the most exciting information to research, learn your local laws and regulations regarding lift kits. Depending on your state, there might be limits to how much you can alter your vehicle’s height. Furthermore, in some states, county rules may differ.

If you find your state has a vehicle lift restriction, keep in mind that most states measure the frame height from the center of the taillights or headlights to the pavement. If you want to lift your Jeep near the high end of the accepted limit, it won’t hurt to keep a tape measure in your glove box.

2. Ideal Height

Once you’re familiar with the law, the next thing you should consider before lifting your Jeep is the ideal height. For many, the reason for a lift is the biggest factor that influences your rig’s ideal height range.

If you want to lift your vehicle to give it a more aggressive appearance, the height is completely up to you. Keep in mind that the higher your vehicle, the higher its center of gravity. This can also mean it will be more difficult to handle, but driving slower will help you maintain stability.

If you want to accomplish specific feats, like safely driving through water while off-roading, there are more specific guidelines to help you choose a lift kit. Lifting your vehicle gives you greater ground clearance and makes it easier for you to drive over obstacles or into water safely.

3. Other Modifications

Another factor you should consider before lifting your Jeep is other modifications. After installing a lift kit, most people switch to larger tires. But depending on your lift kit, you might need to make other modifications to ensure you have a smooth and safe ride. For example, if you increase your tires’ diameter more than two inches, you will probably have to change your ring and pinion gears.

If you opt for a significant lift, you’ll probably want to change out your driveshaft. The driveshaft transfers force from the transmission to the differential, and when you lift your Jeep, you change the driveshaft angle. You’ll need to change the driveshaft to prevent it from getting damaged, especially if you raise your Jeep more than 2.5 inches.
