Team Triple A raises more than half-million for St. Jude

A St. Jude fundraising team from Huntingdon that calls themselves Team Triple A has raised an enormous amount of cash for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital since beginning in 2008.

“We have even surprised ourselves,” said team member Denise Tucker.

As of 2019 the team, over the years, has raised just over a half-million dollars.

The St. Jude Memphis Marathon is held every year the first Saturday in December. According to Tucker, in 2008, a group of friends decided to do the half marathon distance of this race which is 13.1 miles.

“We were so impressed and motivated that day that we decided to come back the following year,” said Tucker. “The group decided they wanted to be part of the Hero program.”

Individuals and teams in the Hero program commit themselves to raise money for St. Jude.

The year 2009 was the first year the Triple A team entered the Marathon. The group trained for the race as well as held various fundraising events.

“We felt confident that we could raise $2,000, but ended the year with $12,611,” said Tucker.

For 2019 the team raised a walloping $58,311.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis is known for the way it leads the world in understanding, treatment and the defeat of childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Founder and entertainer Danny Thomas opened the doors to St. Jude in 1962 with the dream that “no child should die in the dawn of life.”

Unlike any other hospital, the majority of the funding comes from individual contributions such as the one made by Team Triple A. Due to generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude.
