Huntingdon Special School District Board of Education members discussed adding soccer as a middle school sport at the Feb. 20 meeting.
However, they agreed to table it until next month.
“It would cost about $3,000 to start,” said Director of Schools Pat Dillahunty. “There is a lot of interest.”
Dillahunty said she had talked with McKenzie Middle School soccer coach Kerrick Owens about what was involved in organizing a team.
It would be a spring co-ed sport with approximately 21 on a team with two managers. There would be nine games on a schedule.
The funding could come through parents, fundraising and charging admission to the games.

The coaching situation is the problem now. Dillahunty said she had no one available that could serve as a coach. There would need to be an in-house coach from the school and possibly a person from the community.
Audit findings were discussed. At the school level concerning internal school funds, there were minimal findings.
They included: Collection of money by teachers – There was an incident of date of teacher collection not matching office receipt dates. Segregation of duties – For a school district the size of Huntingdon, Dillahunty says this will always be listed. Ticket sequence and reconciliation – Incident of a gap in ticket sequence and a deposit after three days of the event were noted (due to fall break).
Board members agreed to add a central office supervisor at Dillahunty’s suggestion.
“I have thought about this for two or three years,” said Dillahunty. “We could use a 12-month person.”
Board member Tim Tucker said he thought technology was going to get ahead of the school system if a supervisor was not hired.
Dillahunty said she would start looking at the budget and setting money aside for the position in the future.
Three items on the consent agenda were approved that included the Jan. balance sheets and minutes from the Jan. 16 meeting, a resolution to update current Occupational Safety and Health program plan, a leave of absence for Samantha Carlton for April 27-May 26, 2020.
The board was advised about the Student Congress on Policies in Education (SCOPE) that will be held March 10 at Middle Tennessee State University.
The next school board meeting will be March 19 at 7 p.m.
