McKenzie police office Ryan White is now the interim police chief. It was noted in the McKenzie Council meeting Sept. 8 that he had been named assistant police chief. However, in the meantime police chief Craig Moates has retired and White is now the acting chief.

Moates, 64, has served as chief since 2013.

There have been several McKenzie officers who have quit their jobs and laid the blame to Moates.

In an e-mail from Mayor Jill Holland concerning Moates’ retirement she said that he had accomplished a lot for the city during his time with the McKenzie Police Department, including a 13.7 percent overall reduction of crirme over a three-year period, 2019-2021,

“We truly thank him for his time with us and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” she said.

Continuing, she said. “The safety of our city remains a main priority of the mayor and council.”

In her announcement, she said that White will be the acting chief.

“I have complete confidence that he will continue to do a great job in this role.”

According to the mayor, the city will begin the replacement search process immediately to determine the best possible fit for this role

“There is a lot of support for our law enforcement in the community and I know the officers and dispatchers will continue working hard to serve and protect our community well during this change,” said the mayor. “If anyone should have any question in the community, feel free to come speak with me at city hall as my door is always open.”

White, 41, said there will be no major changes, but the officers will be on the streets doing their job for the citizens of McKenzie.

He has worked for the city as an officer for 21 years, going through the ranks. He has served as a patrolmen, corporal, sergeant, investigator, lieutenant, assistant chief and now chief.

“I have received lots of support from the people which I sincerely appreciate,” he said.
