Old Glory will be flying at dam come March

The Carroll County News Leader received a letter to the editor that was in the Jan. 18 newspaper on page 3A.

It was from Dr. M.T. McDonald, a retired Captain of the USAF Dental Corps.

He was wondering what had happened to the large flag that once flew at the dam site of the Carroll County 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake.

He said in his letter that he and several of the veterans in the area were greatly missing it. He was concerned that it seemed the flag had been permanently retired since it had been taken down and  not promptly replaced.

I agree. Old Glory sure looks good flapping in the breeze as you pass the dam on U.S. Highway 70.

Well, I have great news Dr. McDonald. I checked into the matter and this is what I found out.

Here is Lake Manager Jake Headrick’s quote about the situation.

“We are putting a new one up in March. It’s $2,000 so we had to put it off for a little. The old one was ripped and not fit to fly so we took it down. We’ve already replaced the one at the office and added a state flag as well.”

Dr. McDonald said this in his letter that we all have a tremendous respect for our flag and country and seeing the flag waving in the breeze reminds us of our service to this wonderful country and to the many men and women that have given their lives for the freedoms we still have.

Indeed, our flag is a source of pride for our country.

I have not been out that way in a while and did not know that the flag was not flying there.

Thank you so much Dr. McDonald for calling my attention to the fact it was missing.

I’m looking forward to seeing it fly again there. Thanks to TWRA for letting us know when we can expect Old Glory back in its rightful place.
