McKenzie sophomore Savannah Davis wanted to make a statement Wednesday night, March 2, in the Region 6A championship game at West Carroll.
There was a perception that Davis may have been slighted following her 49-point performance in two tournament games. She was left off the all-tournament team and had to share the district MVP honor.
Davis wanted to rectify that error and did so in a big way as McKenzie routed Houston County 73-58 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.
Davis scored 29 points and she didn’t even play in the fourth quarter. The No. 1-ranked Lady Rebels improved to 27-2 with the victory and earned the right to host Moore County in substate Saturday night (see related story).
Davis and Mikaela Reynolds combined for 20 first-quarter points as the Lady Rebs printed to a 22-11 lead.
Davis kept rolling, finishing the first half with 19 points. McKenzie led the Lady Irish 42-28 at the break. The Lady Rebels built a 30-point lead in the third quarter when they called off the dogs.
Mikaela Reynolds finished with 18 points, Kylie Reynolds knocked down nine.
Josey Gant led Houston County with 19, Karlie Stinson had 17 and Kennedy Jones added 12. The Lady Irish traveled to 32-4 Wayne County for substate, ultimately losing that game 57-45.
Davis was named region MVP while Mikaela Reynolds and Briley Auvenshine were All-Region picks.
