News from the Farmers Market

The McKenzie Farmers Market had a great day on Saturday. We had almost 300 customers, and 15 vendors who had fresh corn, tomatoes, okra, squash, onions, peppers, potatoes, cantaloupes, watermelons, peanuts and more home grown produce, baked goods and crafts.  We are pleased to have vendors from surrounding areas including Springville, Union City, Clarksville, Huntingdon, Trevezant, Gleason, and other communities. In addition to our McKenzie customers, we are also welcoming those from surrounding communities including those coming from Murray and beyond. They have commented that their reasons for visiting the McKenzie Farmers Market are not only the wide variety of products but the friendliness and hospitality of our vendors, fellow customers, and they enjoy coming to McKenzie and eating and shopping while they are here.  We certainly welcome them all and hope they continue to visit our town and experience our southern hospitality.

We continue to attract wonderful crafts vendors, and it is amazing at the talent some of these artists are bringing to the market. Beautiful hand-painted gourds were displayed and are used for wren houses. A 100-year-old loom was used to make lovely table runners, placemats, rugs and other items made out of blue jeans, t-shirts, and other apparel. If you have  favorite or keepsake apparel, or an old tablecloth you don’t want to part with, you might consider having this artist weave it into a rug or table runner that you can use and always keep.

Our delicious baked goods, jams, jellies, candies, fudge, cookies, pies, cakes and breads continue to sell out every week. Free range just laid eggs and antibiotic and chemical free beef are also staple items each week on our customers’ lists.

Our vendors continue to have beautiful plants, shrubs, and flowers for any garden- large or small, including creative and stunning succulent gardens for desk tops and window sills.

Youth Activity Day was a fun and delicious treat as the children learned about the Hungry Caterpillar turning into a butterfly and made their own hungry caterpillars out of grapes, cherry tomatoes and raisins. This Saturday, August 7th at 10:00 a.m. will be a fun activity, and we invite all of our youth, 4th grade and under to participate by entering our 4-H Fruit and Vegetable Derby. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be given. All Derby race cars must be made with fruits and vegetables and complete instructions are given on the McKenzie Facebook page, or drop by city hall for a copy.

The McKenzie Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, and Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
