New faces will be seen on school boards in Carroll County due to Thursday’s election and because of appointments that will have to be made within the next couple of months.
Huntingdon
Huntingdon Special School District will have two new members on the board who will be sworn in at the Aug. 20 meeting at 7 p.m.
The winners were Morgan G. Butler, and Shawna Barger Smith. Smith was the top vote getter with 817 votes, followed closely by Butler with 806. Candidate Marcus Beal received 615 votes.
Smith and Butler will succeed Jerry Morris who, served over 30 years on the board, and Paul Stokes.
County
Incumbents Harold McClain, Jr. of District 1 and Kenna Bailey of District 3 were elected to their seats on the county school board. McClain received 1,099 and 1,317 respectively. The terms are for four years.
The Carroll County School Board will be appointing someone to fill Tonya Stepp’s seat in District 2 since she decided not to seek re-election. No one qualified to run.
Superintendent Johnny McAdams said he doesn’t expect the board to select anyone until probably the Oct. meeting.
“The board will probably discuss the process of selecting someone at the October meeting, although that will be the board’s decision,” said McAdams.
Hollow Rock- Bruceton
In the Hollow Rock – Bruceton Special School District will see one new member on the board in the Westport-Spanish Grove District with another one to be selected by the board in District 17-Vale .
Board member Vicki Brown chose not to qualify for the District 17 – Vale seat so a board member will have to be selected, possibly in October.
In the Westport-Spanish Grove District, newcomer Nick Maness won with 27 votes. He is succeeding Joe Robinson, who served 24 years on the board, and decided against running again.
In the Town of Bruceton, District 16, Brad Hurley, who is the current board chairman, was the winner with 137 votes in the contested race with first time candidate David “Coach” Thomas who garnered 118 votes.
April Hampton, who won in the District 16 At Large with 434 votes, will serve Randy Kelley’s unexpired term of two years. She was appointed several months ago to his position when Kelley resigned to become the school’s School Resource Officer (SRO).
In Hollow Rock’s District 16, the lone candidate, Incumbent Tim Runions won with 111 votes.
McKenzie
Three newcomers were elected to the McKenzie Special School District Board of Education in Thursday’s election.
The top vote getter of the three was Karen T. Fowler, who garnered 810 votes. She was followed by Chad Brown with 690 and Misty Aird with 682.
Jan Latimer, whose term was up and the incumbent in the race, received 646, and was not re-elected.
John Austin, who has served as chairman for several years, and Lance Rider, whose terms were up, chose not to qualify to run again.
Board member Norman French resigned a few months ago. His successor will be named at the October board meeting, according to Director of Schools Lynn Watkins. Potential candidates will be asked to send a resume and a letter requesting the position.
South Carroll
In the South Carroll At-Large District Special School District, one incumbent and two newcomers, one of which was a write-in candidate, were elected to the board.
Incumbent Corey Bartholomew, who is the current board chairman, received 331 votes. Nick Cobb, who was on the ballot, garnered 269 votes and Donna G. McDaniel-Cox, the write-in candidate, was the recipient of 53 votes.
Board members Philip Moore and Jeremy Gurley chose not to become candidates.
West Carroll
West Carroll Special School District Board of Education will add two new board members while retaining two incumbents.
Newcomers are Jeremy Jackson and David Hilliard.
Jeremy Jackson, who received 423 votes, will replace Mike Foster, who served on the board for 20 years from the Old County District. David Hilliard, who received 122 votes, will serve out the two-year unexpired term of Nancy Johnson from the Old Atwood District. Andy Morton, who received 97 votes, had been appointed to Johnson’s seat when she resigned several months ago.
The two incumbents are William Robert Robinson and Misty Mitchell.
