Mustangs scrimmage twice as season approaches

The Huntingdon Mustang football team began preparation for the upcoming season as they participated in two scrimmages this past week. The Mustangs were scheduled to play Northside on July 30, but Covid issues forced the Jackson team to cancel.

The Mustangs picked up Liberty Tech of Jackson on Monday, August 2 at Huntingdon, and Huntingdon scored four times and held the Crusaders without a score for the length of the scrimmage. The scrimmage consisted of each team running ten plays before giving the ball to the other team.

The Mustangs scored on all four of its possessions and got touchdown runs from Cade Wood, who scored on runs of 12 and 70 yards, and Gray Eubanks, who scored from eight yards out and threw a touchdown pass to Blane Fields that covered 50 yards.

The Mustangs then made the trip to Covington on Friday to face a yearly powerhouse in the Chargers. The Mustangs held their own against the bigger Chargers, who have a school enrollment of around 800, and tied as both team scored four times each with their first-teamers on the field. The format for this scrimmaged changed as each team had the traditional four downs to make a first down.

The Mustangs fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 but scored three more times to end in a tie. The Mustangs got touchdowns on the ground from Gray Eubanks and Tayshawn Rivers. Blake Reeves and Blane Fields both caught touchdown passes.

The Mustangs are back in action this week as they host the Huntingdon QB Club Jamboree and will play McNairy in the second game of the night.
