The Huntingdon Mustangs tallied their biggest point total in a game since 2000 Friday night, Oct. 11, as the Mustangs dominated Wayne County 70-8. This region win allowed the team to hold on to their unbeaten record this year. Huntingdon is now 8-0 for the season and atop Region 6-1A with a 4-0 region record. This win also evened the Mustangs’ lifetime record with Wayne County at 3-3. It was the third win in a row in the series for Huntingdon.
Summary
The Mustangs relied on great field position in the first half and scored on ten of its 11 possessions in the game. The offense was threatening on last possession as the clock ticked to zero ending the game. The second half was played with a running clock and ten-minute quarters. They had eight possessions in the first half and led 56-0 at the half. Huntingdon rushed for 421 yards in the game and completed one pass for 30 yards. They held Wayne County to 39 total yards in the first half and 119 for the game. 78 of those yards came on the Wildcats only scoring drive against the Mustang reserves in the fourth quarter.
Stat Leaders
The Mustangs were led offensively by Hunter Ensley who rushed five times for 101 yards and three touchdowns and he threw for one touchdown. Brandon Lawton rushed seven times for 74 yards and a touchdown. Konnor Pearson rushed three times for 45 yards and a score and caught a pass for a touchdown. Defensively, Devin McClerkin returned a fumble for a touchdown. Blake Bradley and Sebastian Kee recovered fumbles and Blane Fields intercepted a pass.
Game Detail
First Half
Huntingdon led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter as they scored on their first possession of the game when Ensley sprinted for ten yards with 8:33 left in the first. Ensley scored his second touchdown of the game on the Mustangs’ next possession on a 24-yard run with 8:15 left. Ensley then tossed a 30-yard pass to Pearson with 5:57 left in the first on the next possession. McClerkin capped off the scoring in the first with a 15-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Cole Edwards converted all four extra points for a 28-0 lead at the half.
Pearson got the Mustangs on the board to start the second quarter with a 38-yard run for a touchdown with 11:40 remaining in the first half on the Mustangs’ first possession of the second quarter. Bradley then recovered a fumble to set up a ten-yard run by Lawton with 11:20 left in the first half. Two minutes later, Ensley darted two yards for a touchdown and Bradley, subbing at QB, scored with 38 seconds left in the half on an 11-yard run. Edwards again converted all the extra points for a 56-0 lead at the half.
Second Half
The Mustangs started the third quarter with possession and went seven plays and scored on a two-yard run by Grant Bartholomew with 5:04 left in the game. Fields then intercepted a Wildcat pass at the Wayne County 32 and Aden Hutcherson put his name in the scoring column with a 32 -yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Edwards made the extra points as he was 10-10 in the game and has made his last 13 in a row. Wayne County scored the final points of the night on a 10-play drive and a three-yard run by back-up QB Austin Watson and a two-point conversion for a final score. In the end, the Mustangs dominated Wayne County 70-8.
The Mustangs travel to Perry County this week to face the Vikings for a region game and a kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
