The Huntingdon Mustang High School varsity and JV teams competed in the Scotts Barbeque Jamboree at Lexington Friday. It was the Mustang offense in the JV and Varsity portions that was doing the cooking, as both offenses exploded. The Mustangs piled up 35 points as the JV won over McNairy 14-0, and the varsity won 21-0 in two quarters of play.

In the JV segment, the Mustangs took advantage three Bobcat turnovers to defeat McNairy 14-0. After the Mustangs failed to score on their opening drive, that lasted nine plays and reached the McNairy 11 before being stopped on fourth down, the Mustangs recovered a fumble at the McNairy 4. After a penalty, Wesley Williams scored on a two-yard run and Broox Bennett ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Tyreke Hutch then intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to make the score 14-0. The Mustangs then recovered a fumble on McNairy’s next possession, to end the Jamboree that was one 20-minute quarter with a running clock.

The High School Mustangs played McNairy in the third segment with one quarter being 12 minutes and the second 12 minutes with a running clock. On the first play from scrimmage, Landon Gordon went 61 yards to the nine and two plays later scored on a four-yard run. Cole Chafin tacked on the PAT and the Mustangs led 7-0. McNairy moved the ball on their next drive but Gray Eubanks intercepted a pass at the Mustang 14. The Mustangs then turned the ball over to the Bobcats on a fumble.

Brady Warbritton then recovered a Bobcat fumble at the Huntingdon 38, and the Mustangs went 62 yards in seven plays. They scored on a 19-yard run by Warbritton, and Chafin kicked the extra point through for a 14-0 lead. The Mustangs’ defense then forced a punt and the Mustangs took over at their own 35 and found the end zone in six plays. Meal Leavitt scored on a four-yard run, then Chafin made his third PAT in a row and the Mustangs took a 21-0 win over McNairy.

For the short time the Mustangs were on the field they rushed 18 times for 223 yards as Gordon led the way with 106 yards, and Leavitt had 84. In the JV contest, Williams rushed for 33 yards and caught a pass for four and Bennett ran for 23.

The Mustangs open their season at home this Friday at Paul Ward Stadium as McKenzie visits for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
