Modified Carroll County Fair gets underway Monday

The Carroll County Fair, set for the upcoming week, Sept. 21-26, will be different from any fair held in the past due to COVID 19 pandemic, according to Laura A. Keeton, president of the Carroll County Fair Association.

In other words, the fair will not be recognizable as the usual Carroll County Fair.

Unfortunately, there will be no indoor activities. All pageants, the dog show, senior day activities and exhibits normally placed in the exhibit hall will be cancelled this year.

At this time, the carnival, livestock show, 4-H pullet show/sale, poultry exhibit, monster truck show, truck pull and Pope’s Carnival Foods will be available.

The Torres Family Circus, one of the previous scheduled events, recently notified fair personnel they will not be coming, according to Linda Martin, who always serves as the superintendent of Domestic Arts.

“We will be taking extra precautions in the way of extra sanitizing and requesting everyone to wear a mask and maintain distance from persons not in your family group,” said Keeton. “I, as Fair Association President, have been regular contact with the carnival and they have had no problems at the places they have played. Further, they are going above and beyond in sanitizing the rides and distancing rides to keep their patrons safe.”

On Monday the Junior Livestock Association will put on a show that starts after lunch. Steers, swine, goats and sheep can be shown. There will be a chicken show after lunch. Registration starts at 10 a.m.

From Tuesday – Saturday, Sonshine Amusements will set up their carnival. The Predator Monster Truck show will be be Tuesday and Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m., On Thursday night, Crossfire band will be playing staring at 7 p.m.  From Tuesday – Friday night, the entrance fee will be $3 for persons who don’t want to visit the carnival. Bracelets can be purchased by anyone wanting to do carnival rides. On Saturday night there is one admission charge of $12. The tractor truck pull will be held starting at 7 p.m.

“Also, in this time of high stress, we could all use a little enjoyment and relaxation,” she said. “So if you feel comfortable doing so, we urge you to put on your mask, sanitize your hands frequently and come enjoy the fair.”

Yes, things will be different this year due to coronavirus, especially in the evening hours. We have had to reduce our menu this year to: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, French fries, nachos & cheese, and Coke products.
