McKenzie High School’s 2019 boy’s basketball team was the center of attention at the April 11 McKenzie council meeting.
The team had a very successful season, winding up as one of the final four teams in the state.
“This is one of the neatest things we do is to honor our young people in the community,” said Mayor Jill Holland.
Each team member was given a copy of the proclamation and shook hands individually with the council members before posing for photos with the mayor and council members.
The team members won the District 11A championship and were Region 6A champions, their first regional title in 45 years. It was the first time since 1998 that McKenzie had been represented at the state tournament.
“In addition to their outstanding and unrelenting total team effort,” said the mayor. “the Rebels take great pride in respecting their opponents and playing the game.”
Members of the team include: Ben Austin, Tyler Spivey, Brandon Hobson, Lucas King, Micah Austin, Nate Whitsell, Lazarick Hill, Lane Horton, Evan Jarrett, West Cook, Jonathan Moore, Elijah Seivers, Eli Surber, Jaden Currie, Caleb Gill, Jake McDaniel, Zayden McCaslin, and Andrew Cole.
The coaches, John Wilkins, Larry Joe Smith and Preston Henderson, were recognized for their leadership, knowledge, and guidance in coaching this championship team, along with the help of the team managers who include Drew Beeler, Stephone Haynes, Logan Green, Allie Chappell and Claire Wilkins.
