McKenzie Lady Rebels, Rebels reach 11A finals

McKenzie High School’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played for the District 11A championships last Friday after their district semifinal victories Monday and Tuesday.
McKenzie played Houston County in both boys’ and girls’ finals Friday. Results were not available because of the early President’s Day deadline.
In the girls’ semifinal at McKenzie Moday, the Lady Rebels defeated McEwen 73-49 behind a balanced effort.
The Lady Rebels took a 16-10 lead after the first, but doubled up the Lady Warriors by halftime, 36-18. McEwen had a solid third quarter, but Kylie Reynolds’ effort in the fourth helped surge McKenzie right into the championship round.
Savannah Davis led the Lady Rebels with 25 points. Kylie Reynolds scored 17, nine coming in the final frame. Mikaela Reynolds and Briley Auvenshine added 11 apiece. Katie Chesser tossed in eight.
Faith Colston led McEwen with 14. Amberlee Hankins had nine, Abby Harrington scored seven.
McEwen played Big Sandy in the 11A consolation finals Friday at Bethel University. Again, results were not available by presstime.
In the boys’ game, McKenzie took a big early lead and knocked off Big Sandy in the 11A semifinals at MHS 79-60. Both teams shot well, but McKenzie’s early advantage proved to be too much for the Red Devils.
McKenzie improved to 16-5 overall and advanced to play Houston County Friday afternoon at Bethel University for the District 11A championship. Big Sandy battled McEwen Friday afternoon at Bethel for the consolation finals.
Check next week’s paper for results of the 11A finals.
