Lori Nolen is new Huntingdon council member

NEW COUNCIL MEMBER – Lori Nolen is sworn in as the new Huntingdon council member. She is serving out the unexpired term of Vice Mayor Nina Smothers who is now mayor.

The Town of Huntingdon has a new council member. She is Lori Nolen, former executive director of The Dixie, Home of the Hal Holbrook Theatre.

She was sworn in by Town Judge Marsha Johns prior to the Sept. 27 meeting. She is succeeding Nina Smothers who as the vice mayor became mayor upon the death of Mayor Dale Kelley.

An ordinance passed on the second and final reading  that amends the official zoning map of Huntingdon to rezone eleven properties, or portions, in the vicinity of Paris Street from B-1 (Neighborhood Business) to R-1 (Low Density Residential).The properties are owned by Gerald Taylor, Mark Marshall, Herschel Wilkes, Joseph Foster, Roscoe Myles and Terry Rhodes. A public hearing was held prior to the vote, but no one spoke.

By a resolution that passed the town is accepting an allocation of $190,000 from the county. In addition, the town will receive American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation of $1,249,471.59 from the state Dept. of Environment and Conservation that will be used for wastewater  system improvements.

In conjunction with the Dept. of Environment and Conservation and ARPA, a resolution passed that selected Community Develop Partners, LLC that will assist in the administration of the project. A second resolution passed that selected J.R. Wauford & Co., as consulting engineers to assist with the engineering design and implementation of the project.

Council members voted to purchase six 2023 police interceptor SUV vehicles  at a cost of $228,216 from Peppers Ford. The cost of one vehicle is $38,036. The bids were reviewed for compliance with the published specifications. Only one bid was received.

Council Member Kelly Eubanks questioned when the patrol cars would be delivered. The mayor said it would be about six months.

It was announced there would be a beer board meeting on Oct. 4 at 5:15 to consider an application filed by Hillary Clifft, dba Monarch Social Cafe, located at 19703 Main Street East.

In communications from the mayor, she announced that the Bassmaster Junior National Championship tournament was held in July with 64 teams participating. 

The 29th Annual Heritage Festival was another successful event with an estimated 1,500 in attendance.There was a record number of vendors including 11 food vendors. The alumni Huntingdon High School chorus sang to everyone’s enjoyment. The town employees were mentioned as going the extra mile by the mayor.

The next Bicentennial event will be the cemetery tour on Oct. 22 at 3 and 4:30 p.m. This is a free event but tickets are required.

The police Department through a memo notification noted that they intend to request controlled property items from the Law Enforcement Support Office.

At the close of the meeting citizen Jan Ostiquy presented the mayor with a shadow box that had dried flowers inside from the Dale Kelley funeral service.
