Joseph Wert out on $100K bond

The man charged with first degree murder in the Jan. 14 shooting death of Larry Gene Watkins, Jr., 46, of Cedar Grove is out of jail on bond.

Joseph Wert, 21, of Cedar Grove is free on $100,000 bond that was posted on Feb. 14, according to jail records.

In a Jan. 29 bond hearing, General Sessions Judge Larry Logan set Wert’s bond at $100,000 or $75,000 house arrest with an ankle monitor.

Watkins died at the scene of the shooting where Wert lived with his mother and father at 660 Moss Creek Road.

According to Sheriff Andy Dickson, Watkins was shot once in the neck and once in the chest with a six-shot revolver.

Wert reportedly was employed by Watkins, who owned a mobile home repair service and the two had been together that day prior to the shooting. Wert was reportedly dating Watkins’ ex-wife.

A March 27 preliminary hearing has been set in General Sessions Court has been set.
