A Huntingdon man, who stole a truck in Carroll County, led officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended in a wreck in Waverly and the deaths of a Waverly couple on Feb. 10.
Tory McConahie, 26, of Huntingdon is in jail in Humphreys County Jail in lieu of a $1,016,750 bond charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, evading arrest, reckless driving, DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a revoked license.
He will also face charges in Carroll County of felony reckless endangerment, felony abating, driving on revoked license and theft over $10,000, according to Chief Deputy David Bunn. He will also face a charge of aggravated assault by the Highway Patrol for striking Roberts’ vehicle. His bond in Carroll County will be $250,000.
Killed were Larry and Patricia Franklin. Waverly Police Chief Grant Gillespie said at approximately 1:45 p.m., his department was notified of a police pursuit entering the city on Highway 70 west. He said Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies were pursuing the suspect, who was in a stolen truck.
“As the suspect vehicle entered the Highway 70/Clydeton Road intersection, it struck another vehicle, causing the death of a local Waverly couple.”
McConahie sustained minor injuries and was later treated and released from Three Rivers Hospital the same day.
Bunn said about two weeks ago Guy Roberts of Huntingdon had reported that his GMC truck had been stolen. On Feb. 10 at 12:55 p.m. Roberts called the Sheriff’s Department and advised that he had discovered the truck on North Pine St. in Bruceton. Roberts pursued the vehicle on Highway 70 toward Camden. At 1:12 p.m. the Sheriff’s Dept. received a call that Roberts has been hit by the stolen truck in Benton County on Sawyer’s Mill Road. The vehicle Roberts was driving was disabled and an ambulance was called because of possible injuries to Roberts who was not injured enough to be transported to the hospital.
Carroll County Deputy Kenny Tucker, who had taken up the pursuit, recognized McConahie when the stolen truck drove onto Hwy. 70 from Old Bruceton Rd.
Tucker knew that Carroll County had a parole violation and several felony charges on McConahie.
As the pursuit headed toward Camden, Tucker noted that McConahie reached speeds over 100 miles per hour, almost hitting two or three cars head on, according to Bunn.
The pursuit continued toward New Johnsonville on Hwy 70 where Humphreys County deputies lead the pursuit with Tucker three cars behind. Two Wavery police officers spike the road with one tire on the truck being blown out. Once at the Waveryly intersection, McConahie ran through the traffic light where he hit the Franklin vehicle.
