How To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in a Landfill

Some of the most significant contributors to methane gas leaking into our atmosphere are landfills. Reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that landfills produce is crucial to protecting the Earth from the escalation of climate change. To minimize these gases, landfill employees and owners must work together to come up with sustainable solutions.

Biosolid Topsoil

Biosolids can create a topsoil that covers decommissioned areas of a landfill or the landfill in its entirety. Biosolids contain microorganisms that feed off methane, converting the gas into carbon dioxide—a far less harmful greenhouse gas. Using biosolids can reduce gas emissions, making it an extremely effective way to reduce methane gas.

Landfill Wells

Landfill employees can contain the trash in a landfill so that no methane can leech into the surrounding area or pollute any water. They can do this by drilling wells with heavy-duty drilling rigs. The landfill can then reutilize the gas that collects in these wells for electricity, fuel, and heat.

Wood Chips and Sawdust

Wood chips and sawdust can be layered over the trash to act as compostable materials that aid in converting gases into carbon dioxide. Landfills can cover vast areas of land, but some sections can be temporarily covered or capped while the trash decomposes. Layering the sawdust and wood chips through layers of garbage can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the landfill by reducing the amount of methane the garbage produces.

We must brainstorm various ways to limit the amount of greenhouse gases that our landfills are emitting into the atmosphere. Converting methane gas into a less harmful greenhouse gas, such as carbon dioxide, is still a safer solution than ignoring the problem and letting the methane leak into the air. Make a difference today and change how your landfill works to better our environment.
