How To Keep Your Energy Bill in Check This Winter

With the cold season approaching, many of us are preparing to remain indoors and enjoy the heat our homes give us. However, that comforting heat comes with a price tag. Keep your energy bill in check this winter by preparing your home for the cold and only using the heat you need.

Add Insulation As Needed

Insulating your home is a common way to cut down on energy costs by reducing the amount of heated air that escapes the house. Before the first true cold snap of the season, check all your insulation, including in the attic, if you have one. If there are any gaps, or if your existing insulation is too old to do its job effectively, add extra insulation where you need it most.

Unplug Electronics When Not in Use

Do you love to decorate your home for the winter holidays? Those twinkly lights and animatronic decorations may bring you lots of joy, but you don’t need to run them when you’re not home.

Turning off your electronics may not be enough; many devices still draw energy as long as they’re plugged in. Before you leave home for the day, unplug any decorations or appliances you won’t be using until you return.

Downsize Your Water Heater

It may seem counterintuitive, but downsizing your home’s water heating system can provide you with more comfort by heating your water on demand. Traditional tank-based water heaters often waste energy by heating up large volumes of water when you really only need enough for a quick shower. Try switching to a tankless water heater, which will heat smaller amounts of water more quickly, and only when you need it.

Use a Smart Thermostat

If you often leave your house empty during the winter, whether during your work hours or while you’re on vacation, you don’t need it to be heated the whole time. Swap out your old thermostat for a programmable smart option; this way, you can turn off the heat when you’re not at home. And when you make your way back home, you can use the app to turn on the heat so your home is nice and cozy upon your return.

This winter, keep your energy bill in check by only using the heat and electricity you need. You don’t have to sacrifice your comfort for frugality’s sake; all it takes is a little extra planning to keep your energy usage at a manageable level.
