Hanford Rook

Hanford (“Hank”) Rook, 99, of Bruceton passed away Monday, Jan. 11 at the home of his son, Stephen Rook.

Mr. Hanford was born was born April 12, 1921 in Dyer County, near the community of Nauvoo. On March 2, 1947, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Louise (Cook) Rook at the Corinth Church of Christ, Corinth, Miss., by the preacher, J.A. Thornton. Their marriage was blessed by three sons and one daughter.

Hanford grew up on a farm in Dyer County, during the Great Depression. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and served camps in Camden, and in the states of Wash. and Ore. He joined the U.S. Navy SeaBees in 1941 and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was stationed on Okinawa when the war ended, and he was discharged from the Navy in January 1946.

After he and Evelyn married in 1947, he farmed for a while but then went to work for Forcum-Lannom Construction Co., of Dyersburg. Forcum-Lannom sent him to various jobs in Tn., Ky., and Ark. building housing projects, schools, hospitals, and factories. He built pumping stations on the Ark. River that became Lake Dardanelle near Russellville, Ark.. He, with his family, moved to Bruceton in 1966 to build the H.I.S. warehouse on Rowland Mill Rd. Later he worked for Goodwin Construction Co. and Barger Construction Co., both of Huntingdon. After he retired, he worked as a “handyman” for Central High School, Bruceton, and for people throughout the community.

He was a Christian, a member of the Bruceton Church of Christ. He served as a Bible Class teacher and as one of the elders for many years. His children remember his as the spiritual leader of the house providing an environment where the Lord’s will, as revealed in The Bible, was encouraged, and expected to come first in all things.
