Fred’s in Huntingdon, McKenzie to remain open

Fred’s stores in Huntingdon and McKenzie are not among the 159 nationwide and 23 Tennessee stores that are closing by the end of May.

The Fred’s in Paris at 850 Volunteer Drive is the closest one to Carroll County that is closing, according to a Fred’s Inc. announcement on Thursday.

The news release said the stores closing are underperforming and unprofitable. Liquidation sales at the stores closing have already begun. The company’s 398 other discount stores will remain open.

CEO Joseph Anto said in the release the company will work to move employees to other stores if possible.

The list of stores being closed includes 31 in Mississippi, 25 in Georgia, 19 in both Alabama and Arkansas, 14 in Louisiana, 11 in South Carolina, six in Texas, four in Kentucky, three in North Carolina, two in Missouri and one each in Illinois and Oklahoma.

Besides in Paris, one on Highland in Jackson and one in Medina are scheduled to close.
