Four county teams survive first round of regionals

As of press time Monday, four Carroll County basketball teams were still alive after quarterfinal competition in the Region 7A Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Huntingdon Mustangs and Fillies, West Carroll War Eagles, and McKenzie Lady Rebels all advanced to the regional semifinals.

The quarterfinal round, however, was the end of the season for the McKenzie Rebels, Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers, and West Carroll Lady War Eagles, as well as for the Big Sandy Lady Red Devils of Benton County.

Friday night, the Fillies defeated Wayne County 64-62 and the Lady Rebels topped Collinwood 71-55. The Lady War Eagles fell at Loretto 71-55 and the Lady Red Devils lost at Summertown 99-19.

Saturday night, the Mustangs won over Perry County 79-60 and the War Eagles outscored Wayne County 59-37. The Rebels lost at Summertown 69-59 and the Tigers fell 62-46 at Loretto.

For semifinal competition, the Mustangs traveled to Lorreto Monday night and the War Eagles hosted Summertown. Tuesday night, the Fillies traveled to Summertown and the Lady Rebels hosted Loretto. Results from those games were not available as of press time.

Mustangs 79, Perry Co. 60

 For the first time in several years the Huntingdon Mustang basketball team advanced past the first round of region play with a 79-60 win over Perry County.

The Mustangs took advantage of their size and outside shooting as post player Keyshun Hoard scored a career high 27 points with most of those points coming in the paint. Jeb Atkinson made five three-pointers for the game and had 20 points. D’Allen McCord scored 13 with most of his inside. Other Huntingdon scorers included Bartholomew 7, Pritchard 5, Clark 5, and Bradley 2. The Mustangs also made 18 of 32 foul shots in the game. Perry County was led by Gunner Bradford with 12, Lachlan Matthews 11 and Jeremiah Donaldson with 10.

Fillies 64, Wayne Co. 62

The Huntingdon Fillies pulled off a dramatic 64-62 win over Wayne County Friday in the first round of region play. The Fillies, who trailed by as many as 14 in the second half and faced a ten-point deficit at 53-43 to start the fourth, outscored the Lady Wildcats 21-9 in the final quarter. Addison Postlethwait made a three-pointer with one-minute left to tie the game at 62-62, and Brooklyn Williams, after a missed Wayne County shot, scored on a lay-up with two seconds left for the win.

The Fillies were led by their three seniors who scored 48 points combined. They were led by Williams with 18, and Brooke Butler and Postlethwait both scored 15. Sophie Singleton scored 8, Annabelle Singleton 5, Ashlyn Rich 2, and Shelby Childress 1. Wayne County was led by Lauren Bryant and Michaela Gallian with 20 apiece.

Lady Rebels 71, Collinwood 55

In the Region 6A quarterfinals at McKenzie, the Lady Rebels buried eight triples in the first quarter, effectively ending any upset hopes of the visiting Lady Trojans. The Lady Rebels opened a 26-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They bombed 11 triples on the night and held a 51-17 lead at the break.

Katie Chesser and Kylie Reynolds each had 12 to lead McKenzie. Lilly Bennett had 11 and Savannah Davis added 10.

A.C. Whitehead had seven, Haylee Sims, Rhianna McWilliams and Jamie Hernandez each had six for Collinwood.

War Eagles 59, Wayne Co. 37

The 11A district champion West Carroll War Eagles started region 7A competition with a 59-37 win over Wayne County.

After a tight first quarter, the War Eagles were just barely ahead 13-12, but then they dominated the second quarter 19-8 to hold a 32-20 lead at the half. West Carroll went on to outscore Wayne County 14-6 in the third and 13-11 in the fourth.

Luke Moore led the War Eagles with 13 points, followed by Jalen Anglin 12, Tyler Johnson 11, Josh Clark 8, Xander Moon 5, Andrew Huff 4, and Jed Robinson, JaQuan Adkins, and Jaden Taylor with 2 each. Clay Baughs Tyler Moser each scored 13 for Wayne County.

Summertown 69, Rebels 59

McKenzie and Summertown each had opportunities in the fourth quarter to win the game, but McKenzie and Summertown had to play an extra session to settle the affair. With the score knotted at 59 going into overtime, McKenzie managed a triple from Eli Surber and that was all. Summertown outdueled the Rebels 13-3 to advance to to 6A semifinals. McKenzie ended its season at 15-11 with the loss.

Jonathan Moore had 21 and Bryston Steele had 15 to lead the Rebels. Surber added nine, Marquez Taylor and Caleb Gill each had seven. Only five Rebels scored. Only five Summertown players scored as well, but all reached double figures. Grayson Burleson led with 17, Grant Burleson had 15, Gavin Burleson and Kaden Trotter each had 13 while Skyler Trousdale added 11.

Loretto 62, Tigers 46

The Hollow Rock-Bruceton Tigers concluded their season with a 62-46 loss at Loretto on Saturday.

The Tigers fell behind 10-5 in the first quarter, and Loretto continued to pull away through the second quarter to lead 27-16 at the half. The Tigers rallied and outscored Loretto 18-16 in the third, but that wasn’t nearly enough as Loretto outperformed Central 19-12 in the fourth for the win.

Thomas Crews was top scorer for the Tigers with 17 points, followed by Cameron Lowe 13, Austin Craig 9, Caleb Haskins 6, and Daniel Inman 1. Tabius Simmone led Loretto with 19 points.
