The Huntingdon Fillies and Mustangs basketball teams took to the road on Tuesday, January 10 to Gibson County after coming off wins in their first district wins of the season at home against Union City. The Fillies ranked fourth in the state in the latest poll were facing a Gibson County Lady Pioneer team that was ranked sixth in the same poll. The game was also a match-up of Wilkins as Mitch Wilkins is the head coach at Gibson County and his son David Wilkins is in charge of the Fillies program. It was the elder Wilkins who came out on top as Gibson County defeated the Fillies 75-71.

The Fillies got off to a slow start and the Lady Pioneers knocked down 12 three-pointers to earn the win. The first quarter turned out to be the difference as Gibson County took a 20-11 advantage after one quarter of play. The Fillies stayed ahead of the Lady Pioneers the rest of the game but the first quarter deficit was too big to overcome. The second quarter the Fillies won 16-14 to trail 34-27 at the half and the Fillies outscored Gibson County 18-15 in the third to trail 49-45 heading into the final quarter but the Lady Pioneers stayed the course and both teams scored 26 points in the final quarter and took the win at home. Lilly Kee the Fillies junior post player and the leading scorer for the season to this point led the Fillies with 25 points. Delaney Byars 13, Annabelle Singleton 11, Sophie Singleton 10, Sydney Anderson 5, Lia Fuller 4, and Josey Stokes 3. Gibson County was led by Evyn Cantrell with 23 and made five three pointers, Micah Hart scored 18 and Libby Goad scored 15 and made five three pointers.

In the second game of the night the Mustangs who were on a modest two-game winning streak and their first district win in two years got off to a slow start and fell to the Pioneers 79-47. The Mustangs trailed 42-27 at the half and Friday the Mustangs trailed 14 at the half against Union City but rallied for the win but turnovers and poor shooting never allowed the Mustangs to make the same rally against Gibson County. The Mustangs only had one player in double figures as Landon Gordon scored 11 and scored the first seven points of the game for the Mustangs. Ty Kelley added 9, E.J. Lewis 6, Tycen Willis 6, Caleb Ezell 4, Jordon Willis 4, Kaleb Pearson 3, Graham Bartholomew 2, and Rayshawn Bailey 2. Gibson County was led by their 6’5” center Ethan Turner who scored 26 and Matthew Reynolds with 22.
