Driver wrecks after driving across five lanes of traffic

A McKenzie man was involved in a 6:54 a.m. accident April 15 on 17525 U.S. Highway 79 near David Street in McKenzie.

According to a report filed by McKenzie Patrolman Jeremy Brooks, a black 2016 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Norman E. Burnham, 74, of 1448 Arnold Road, was observed by a witness driving in reverse across five lanes of traffic on Highway 79 into a ditch and yard at a residence at 17540 Highway 79.

After the vehicle made it through the ditch the vehicle began accelerating forward back across the five lanes of traffic into the grassy area of the Hemp Life business, hitting the front support post of the sign and then making contact with a parked white 2001 International West Tennessee Moving truck that was pushed from the contact of the car into another parked white 2016 Freightliner West Tennessee Moving truck, causing damage to both trucks.

The officer viewed a video of Burnham leaving a parking spot in front of the nearby convenience store in reverse at what appeared to be an accelerated speed crossing Highway 79 into the yard before losing the view in the camera.

Burnham, who was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Huntingdon, was unable to remember what happened in order to give a statement, according to the officer.

He may have been possibly injured, the report said.
