County teams going separate ways for district tourneys

For many years, all of Carroll County’s high school basketball teams have hit the court against each other in the same girls’ and boys’ basketball tournaments as part of District 11A competition. But with all the recent redistricting, many of the county’s teams will be going separate ways in this year’s postseason as competitors in different districts.

All of these different district tournaments are scheduled to start either late this week or earlier next week, though exact dates, times, and locations were not available in all cases at press time Monday. But there are some common themes between all the tournaments. They will all start with first-round games hosted by the higher-seeded schools. Teams that win in the first round will then move to a centralized location for the remaining rounds, while first-round losers will be done for the year.

The Huntingdon Mustangs and Fillies are now in 12-AA and will be competing against Westview, Gibson County, Union City, and Milan. As of press time, there were still some district contests to be played, but, for the boys, Westview (4-0) was leading the district, followed by Gibson Co. (4-1), Union City (3-2), Huntingdon (1-5), and Milan (0-4). The Westview girls (4-1) are also leading, followed by Milan (4-2), Union City (4-2), Gibson Co. (2-3), and Huntingdon (0-6).

The semifinal and final rounds for 12-AA boys will be played at Westview, while Martin will by hosting those games for the 12-AA girls.

Three county schools (West Carroll, Hollow Rock-Bruceton, and Clarksburg) will be competing in the District 12-A tournaments. As of press time, the 12-A girls were being led by West Carroll (7-0), followed by Perry Co. (4-2), Clarksburg (3-3), Bruceton (1-5), and Frank Hughes (1-5). The 12-A ranking for the boys as of press time was West Carroll (7-0), Frank Hughes (4-3), Perry Co. (3-3), Clarksburg (2-4), and Hollow Rock-Bruceton (0-6).

The championship rounds in 12-A will be hosted by Perry Co.

The McKenzie Rebels (5-0) and Lady Rebels (4-0) were out front as of press time in District 11-A competition, followed by Houston Co. (4-1 girls, 4-1 boys), McEwen (1-3 girls, 1-4 boys), and Big Sandy (0-5 girls, 0-5 boys).

The District 11A tournament semifinals will begin with girls’ play at the home sight of the highest seeds on Monday, Feb. 14, and the boys playing Tuesday, Feb. 15. The district consolation games and championships will be held in McEwen on Friday, Feb. 18.
