Carroll County Budget Committee members’ discussion centered around the need for the county to hire an executive assistant grant writer at the December 28 meeting.
In a Dec. 8 meeting of the Personnel and Budget Committees, it had already been decided that the position should be placed on the Legislative Body’s Jan. 9 meeting.
After Budget Committee members John Austin and Willie Huffman said in the Dec. 28 meeting that a job description for the position should be written up, County Mayor Joseph Butler said he would provide that information and would take the lead in hiring the person.
“We need to be specific about the position, such as does the sheriff’s department use it?” said Austin.
“I think we need someone seeking out grants,”said committee budget chairman Darrell Ridgely.
“We have to have it laid out what we expect,” said committee member Willie Huffman. “It can pay for itself if we get the right person. I think we need to go forward with it.”
A salary of about $35,000 was mentioned.
Even if passed at the January 9 meeting, it would be February before anyone would be hired, according to the county mayor.
Other items that the Budget Committee decided would be on the Jan. 9 meeting agenda included a couple of budget amendments and salaries for the civic center director and airport manager.
One of the budget amendments will be for a Highway Department loan for $268,000 for two gravel trucks. The other budget amendment will be $17,424 for two HVAC units at the Carroll County Health Department.
The committee tentatively decided on salary amounts for an airport manager and civic center director.
PJ Scott has recently resigned as airport manager and Ben Canovan quit the civic center director’s job to work as Huntingdon Special School District’s grounds supervisor.
The amount of $15,000 was taken from the civic center director’s annual salary of about $50,000 and added to the airport manager’s annual salary making it about $58,865.
