Common Sources of Bad Odors in Your Home

No matter how pretty your home décor is, the whole impression can be shattered by a single unidentified, nasty smell slithering its way into the air. Since smells are intangible, you might have a hard time locating one’s cause. Check these common sources of bad odors in your home to see if they are the offenders in your case.

Garbage Disposal

The garbage disposal in your kitchen sink can give off an unpleasant stench because it holds both water and food particles in its dark compartment. Decomposing organisms may even feed off the residue and produce a rotting smell. You can use cleaning tablets that you drop in to eliminate the odor. Alternatively, you could put in a 2:1 mix of ice and salt to deal with the issue. Shredding up some citrus peels is yet another alternative.

Front-Load Laundry Washer

Moisture is also unavoidable in a front-load laundry washer, where water can collect in the seal area that lines its opening’s edges. The small drawer that you put the detergent in may also have excess water. Mold and mildew can grow in the washer because of the stagnant water, creating a bad odor.

To prevent these issues, leave the door and drawer partially open after you use the washer to let it air dry. To get rid of a smell that has already formed, mix a bit of bleach with water and wipe those areas with a cloth. You can also run the machine empty with a cup of baking soda put in the main compartment and some fabric softener and vinegar in the drawer.

Air Vents

Air vents are inconspicuous, so you may not suspect that they are a common source of bad odors in your home as well. Yet again, moisture is involved. Sometimes, the inside of the vents and the ducts can have mold and mildew because condensation forms there due to the temperature changes that the HVAC system creates. When you turn on your HVAC system, the vents blow out the smell given off by these organisms.

You should unscrew the vents where you detect the stench and clean them with soap. There are also other ways to deodorize air vents, including wiping and dusting the parts of the ductwork that you can reach. If you can’t seem to get rid of the smell, you can also call a professional service to perform a more thorough cleaning.
