2023 Chamber STEM Program

In 2013, the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce established the STEM Inspire program for three high school freshman from each of the five public high schools.  This program exposes students to science experimentation through hands-on activities and open-ended thinking.  The program is facilitated by Dr. Letimicia Fears from the Center for Science Outreach at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.  She is assisted by Ms. Mailene King, a fellow scientist and science educator.

STEM instructors explore subjects and methods that enable students to take their science knowledge to new levels.  In past sessions, STEM students have learned how to create a robot, discussed how drugs affect the brain, dissected a sheep’s brain and a shark, and built binary circuits for computers, along with many other tasks.

The 2023 class has the following students:  Ava Akins, Alyssa Belew, Tobey Brooks, Rion Cary, Thatcher Crews, Katelynn Essary, Peyton Hays, Brody Huff, McKaylin Johnson, Landyn McLearen, Brooklyn Pearson, and Seth Thomas.

The program is free to students and meets on four Saturday mornings at the Chamber.

Dr. Fears spoke of her participation in the program, “I really enjoyed working with these bright young people.  I think it’s great that the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce cares enough to fill this need for their student community members.”
