A List of Common Supplies Used During a Water Birth

Are you getting ready to think about the most suitable birth method for you? A common solution for many new moms is a water birth because it allows them to give birth in the relaxation and comfort of warm water. There is a list of common supplies you need to consider investing in before determining if water birth is right for you.

Birthing Pool

The birthing pool is the most important item you will need. This is the place where the magic happens. There are many things you can expect during a water birth, but one of the most significant is how well the water will support your process.

It’s essential to find a birthing pool that can withstand your needs and support your body. Try to look for one with a water release valve, inflated sides for cushion and support, and a sturdy liner.

Towels Or a Plastic Liner

You might find yourself getting in and out of the pool often to create motion in your body. In this case, you will need plenty of towels or a plastic liner outside the pool.

You will also want towels handy for when you deliver your baby so both of you can dry off and make your way to your designated resting spot. If you have not delivered your placenta before you exit the pool, the plastic liner can provide a layer of sterile protection if it happens to deliver on the bed. That way, your sheets do not get ruined.

A Robe

It’s easier to wear a robe while you are in and out of the pool because they are open in the front and comfortable. If you are spending time wrestling with clothing or layers, you will find yourself more frustrated than you need to be. Wear your most comfortable robe or have it ready for the first minutes postpartum.

For added support, ask your birth support team to toss it in the dryer so it is warm when you’re ready for it.

Handheld Mirror

A handheld mirror is the best way to check the baby’s progress. It can be tricky to see below your pregnant belly when you’re in the water. But checking on the baby’s progress and your cervical dilation can help paint a picture of what is going on and how well the labor is progressing.

A Strainer

A strainer might sound like an odd supply to have at a water birth, but it is beneficial for many reasons. A strainer helps clean the water as it becomes dirty from labor debris, and it also helps pick up the placenta if you give birth to it while in the water. You can pick up an inexpensive strainer and discard it after your birth.

Deciding on how to give birth is an important decision for all women. Hopefully, with this list of common water birth supplies, you feel capable of making an informed decision about whether this is the most suitable method for you.
