63 acres of woods burned

Approximately a total 63 acres of woods burned in three different fires on Feb. 15 in Carroll County, according to Carroll County Fire Chief Amanda Sneed. The state Forestry Department had to assist in all three before they were brought under control.

The first one occurred on Barren Springs Road at 2:35 p.m. The fire broke out when cardboard boxes were being burned, Sneed said. Three aces of woods were burned. Hollow Rock and Bruceton Fire Departments assisted at the scene.

An hour later at 2:46  p.m. District I – Huntingdon, Buena Vista and Westport firemen answered a call to 1010 Maytown Road. A fire had gotten out of control while garbage was being burned at this location. Twenty acres of woods and grassland were burned. A four story house was also threatened, but did not catch on fire.

Two hours later at 4:48 p.m. a third fire broke out in the Natchez Trace Park near Maple Creek Lake. Forty acres of woods were burned before the fire was brought under control. Westport, Clarksburg and Buena Vista Fire Departments answered the call. Sneed said the fire jumped the trench that Forestry fixed, starting again.

She advised people not to burn anything while the wind is up and to call or go on line with the state Dept. of Agriculture’s Division of the Forestry to see if it is ok to burn on a particular day. The phone number is 1-877-350-2876 .
