Bethel University summer/fall graduation speaker Dr. Dale Henry spoke to the university’s 250 graduates Dec. 10 on the value of giving service.
He was introduced by University president Dr. Walter Butler who said Henry was a school teacher, professor, business owner, business consultant and public speaker.
“Today is his 3,224 public speaking engagement and he has written two books,” said the university president.
Dr. Henry questioned the graduates on how many liked fast food.
He said when there is a line of people waiting to be served the cashier generally says only “Next.”
At Chick-fil-A, he said, they sell service.
“They’ll say, ‘It’s my pleasure’ at the end of the transaction,” he said.
In another example he talked about cleaning out his garage and taking it to the dump where he observed a man selling hamburgers, French fries and soft drinks. He was astonished that he was operating near the smelly dump.
But he decided to order some of the food himself.
The man took great care in preparing it and asking him exactly what he wanted on the burger, etc. Henry said he didn’t see why he didn’t fry more than one order of fries at one time and ask him about it.
“Everybody likes hot fries,” he told him.
In closing he told the graduates, “It’s your hot fry day today. Your day to say ‘hot frys.’”
Dr. Butler told graduates that 180 years ago Bethel Seminary was started in McLemoresville and moved to McKenzie in 1870-1871.
“Today is your day,” he said. “This graduation will change your life and two or three generations.”
